Health and Safety Policy for Junior Cricketers - Purpose

This policy outlines the club’s commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for junior cricketers. The goal is to minimize risks and protect players' health and well-being while ensuring they enjoy their cricketing experience.

Scope

This policy applies to all junior players, coaches, volunteers, parents, and staff involved in the club’s activities, including training sessions, matches, and any cricket-related events.

Responsibilties

  • Coaches and Officials:

    • Must be trained in first aid, child protection, and safe coaching practices.

    • Ensure all equipment (bats, balls, helmets, nets, etc.) is in good condition.

    • Conduct regular risk assessments of the training facilities and match venues.

    • Ensure proper supervision ratios between adults and children during all activities.

    • Provide appropriate coaching and warm-up routines to prevent injury.

  • Parents and Guardians:

    • Ensure their child arrives on time with the necessary equipment, protective gear, and appropriate clothing.

    • Inform the coach of any medical conditions or injuries that may affect their child’s participation.

  • Junior Players:

    • Must wear appropriate protective gear during both practice sessions and matches.

    • Report any injuries, discomfort, or concerns to the coach or designated safety officer.

    • Follow all instructions given by coaches and staff regarding safe play.

General Safety Guidelines

  • Equipment:

    • All players must wear protective gear, including helmets, gloves, pads, and abdominal guards, during matches and net practice.

    • Junior players must use age-appropriate equipment, such as size-appropriate bats and properly fitted helmets.

  • Facilities:

    • Ensure that playing surfaces are well-maintained, free of obstacles, and regularly inspected.

    • Provide secure and clean changing rooms and sanitary facilities for junior players.

    • Ensure all practice nets, pitches, and boundary areas meet safety standards.

  • Training:

    • Coaches must tailor training sessions to the age, ability, and physical condition of each player.

    • Warm-ups and cool-downs must be incorporated into all training sessions to prevent muscle strain and injury.

    • Ensure players are taught the correct techniques for bowling, batting, and fielding to reduce the risk of injury.

  • Weather Conditions:

    • Training or matches must be suspended in adverse weather conditions (e.g., lightning, excessive heat, or extreme cold).

    • Provide shaded areas and ensure regular water breaks during hot weather to prevent heatstroke and dehydration.

First Aid and Medical Care

  • First Aid Kit: A fully stocked first aid kit must be available at all training sessions and matches.

  • Injury Protocol:

    • In the event of an injury, the first aider or coach must assess the situation and take appropriate action (e.g., administer first aid, call emergency services).

Safeguarding and Child Protection

  • All coaches and staff must complete a Criminal Records Check (CRC) and receive training in child protection policies. (Politiattest)

  • Coaches and volunteers must never be alone with a junior player. Supervision should always be carried out in groups.

  • Any instances of bullying, harassment, or abuse will be taken seriously and dealt with according to the club’s safeguarding policy.

  • The club will maintain confidentiality in any safeguarding concerns, involving parents and authorities where necessary.

Mental Health and Well-being

  • Coaches must create a positive and inclusive environment for junior cricketers.

  • Any signs of mental or emotional distress in junior players should be addressed, and parents informed.

  • Encourage open communication, ensuring that young players feel comfortable discussing any problems or concerns.

Heat and Hydration Management

  • Provide access to water at all times during training sessions and matches.

  • Schedule regular water breaks during hot weather, and educate players about the importance of staying hydrated.

  • Ensure players are wearing sun protection (e.g., sunscreen, hats) in hot and sunny conditions.

Emergency Procedures

  • In case of an emergency, the club’s emergency response plan must be activated. This includes:

  • Calling emergency services (if necessary).

  • Following established evacuation or emergency protocols at the venue.

  • Ensuring that parents or guardians are immediately informed in the event of a serious incident.
